District Popcorn Sales Exceed $219,000
Of the $1,125,000 of popcorn sold by the Scouts of the Last Frontier Council, our district contributed nearly 20% of the total amount!
The average sale per unit in our district was over $6,000.
That is great and everyone is to be congratulated on such a great effort in helping their units earn money for camp, camp equipment, and other monies for their ideal year of scouting.
We will be sorting popcorn November 7th between 9-11:30AM. As always, if you help sort, you may pick up your popcorn the same day.
Otherwise, units will pick up their popcorn on Saturday, November 8th between 8:00-10:30AM.
University of Scouting This Saturday
This Saturday, November 1st at Putnam City High School, located at NW 50th and Ann Arbor, we will hold our annual University of Scouting at 8:30AM-4:00PM.
What is University of Scouting?
It is a day where over 92 classes are offered to adult leaders of all kinds that pertain to improving your Troop or Pack’s program. You will learn how to conduct discipline in the unit, how to run a Pinewood Derby, How Webelos to Scout transition occurs, and many other classes you can check out online at www.lastfrontiercouncil.org website.
The cost is $20 for all the courses you want to take, but you need to pre-register at the council website.
Lunch will be provided at a additional cost/donation by our own Baden-Powell Troop 98. Also there are several eating establishments nearby.
By attending, you will receive an attractive patch for your uniform as well.
So plan to sign up and learn whatever pertains to your position in scouting.
Veterans Day Opportunities
Pamela Johnson at the TFCU Corporate office (4140 W I-40) has flags that need to be retired. With Veterans Day coming up (November 11), I am sure a Troop or Pack is conducting a ceremony. These are LARGE flags. Her phone # is 319-2207.
Our annual opportunity to serve as servers at Hometown Buffet on North May is here. We will serve water, soft drinks, etc., and also perform a flag ceremony for the veterans and their families who will be special guests that afternoon.
If your Troop is interested in helping, please contact John Robison, District Activities Chair at uplandgamer@yahoo.com.
The Council Needs Your Help
Although the Baden-Powell District has reached their financial goal as a district in our 2008 Friends of Scouting campaign, the Last Frontier Council needs our help.
Not all districts have been able to reach their goals, so I’ve been asked to raise about $7,000 from our district to help out our scouting program.
Where I would like for us to seek this money is from local businesses who share our scouting values.
So think about your attorney, your family physician, your dry cleaners or other people you support by your monthly dollars in their business and ask them if they can make a tax-deductible gift to keep scouting at a high level in our community.
In next week’s Weekly Update, we will recognize those donors and what Troop or Pack helped raise those funds.
Additionally, don’t forget to complete your own pledges before the end of the year. Our budget is based upon what you pledged earlier in the year and we count on you fulfilling those pledges.
Slippery Falls Camperships Available Again This Year
Again this year, the LFC is giving away camperships to Troops who do a little extra work in recruiting new Boy Scouts to their Troop.
Recruit 3 new friends to Scouting and your Troop earn 1 free all expenses paid campership. Recruit 5 new buddies and your Troop earns 2 camperships.
This deal will close on November 30, 2008 so get busy and go to camp free.
The cost of camp usually runs close to $200, so if you recruit 5 new scouts, you’ve saved about $400 for your troop.
Definition of a new scout is a boy who is not currently now a Webelo. However, he can be a boy who was active last year, dropped out, and now you are re-registering in your troop.
Camp George Thomas Fall Family Adventures Ends
What a great month of Cub Scouting we witnessed at Camp George Thomas this year. We had over 375 campers per weekend for the past 4 weeks and that is a great way to kick-off a new year of Scouting.
I know we had several people from our district volunteer as staff members and I’d like to recognize everyone, however, I just don’t have everyone’s name.
I do know that Commissioner Wanda Brown and Linda Dodson along with Justin Barfield, and Jack and Jim Aikman helped. Thank you from all the participants on the great job you did to make this camp memorable!
Unit Commissioners Will Be Visiting Your Unit Soon
Please welcome your unit commissioner who will be visiting your Pack or Troop soon for these reasons:
- In order to prepare for annual re-charter, they need to do an inventory of members of your Pack or Troop.
- They will answer any questions you have about scouting procedures.
- They want to pick up your 2008 Centennial Quality Awards and give you the 2009 one to complete.
- Possibly to make a uniform inspection, because correct uniforming is som important to the morale of your group.
If you aren’t sure of the Unit Commissioner who helps you, please contact District Commissioner, Jim McMinn, at 721-6132 or at greyfox96@yahoo.com.
Remember, the job of the Unit Commissioner is to help you make scouting better.

When Planning Your Pack or Troop 2009 Program…
Make note of events that the district and council have already planned for you.
It’s great for your scouts to join in and see that they are a part of something much bigger than one Pack or Troop. Scouting is composed of many, many units all over the city and southwestern Oklahoma.
What a great way to join in the fun and meet new friends.
It also saves you from having to plan and organize something that we may already have planned on the calendar.
